KUCHING (Dec 11): The Sarawak Initiatives (TSI) has brought festive joy to the Wong Panjai longhouse folks in Lubok Antu with the launching of the new community library, dedicated to life-long learning, literacy, and well-being.

TSI in a release said the library, which launched on Dec 7, will benefit the communities in Wong Panjai, Wong Pandak, Panggang, Pabong, Rakut, Munggu Jabang, and Ensawang.

“Completed in November this year, this facility serves as a multi-functional resource for seven surrounding longhouses in the Lubok Antu area, and a pivotal resource for learning, health, and social programmes.

“It serves as a gathering space for the community to learn and grow, supported by continuous training and collaboration with government and non-governmental partners to ensure its sustainable success,” said the release.

In line with TSI’s pillars, with a strong focus on educational and community engagement initiatives, the library will be managed locally, benefiting from continuous guidance from the project team to ensure its success as a community cornerstone.

Thanks to generous contributions from donors, the library has amassed a collection of over 1,000 books that are predominantly tailored for young readers, making it an invaluable educational resource.

“Conveniently located near Tadika Kemas Wong Panjai, the library directly supports the kindergarten and nearby families.

“Its launch is the result of dedicated collaboration among numerous organisations and individuals who are passionate about enhancing resources in rural Sarawak.”

Significant contributors to the project include i-CATS University College’s Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality, Mercy Malaysia, and Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS).

“Additionally, the sponsors are the Premier’s Office, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Lubok Antu MP Roy Angau Gingkoi, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kuching,” the release added.

According to TSI chairman Datuk John Tenewi Nuek, the community library embodies the power of collaboration.

“By investing in education and skills development, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for rural communities in Sarawak,” he was quoted as saying in the press release.

TSI deputy chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solhi, meanwhile, said the library is more than just books but a reservoir of knowledge.

“It is providing vital resources for life-long learning and personal growth, as well as a place for social interaction and exchange of ideas. I thus hope it is used to the fullest and looked after well.” -The Borneo Post
