KUCHING (Nov 9): The Sarawak Initiatives (TSI) has adopted three key resolutions aimed at strengthening Sarawak’s economic sovereignty and governance, following its Future Economy of Sarawak Forum held at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus on Sept 27.

Announcing the resolutions during the Participating Civil Society of Sarawak press conference on Sarawak Petroleum, Oil and Gas at the Borneo Cultures Museum here today, TSI chairman Datuk John Tenewi Nuek said the outcomes were agreed upon unanimously and with acclamation by all participants.

“These resolutions declared and urged both the federal and Sarawak governments to act decisively,” he said.

John said the first resolution affirmed that all natural resources, including oil and gas found within the territory of Sarawak, rightfully belong to the people of Sarawak.

The second resolution called for the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on a non-partisan basis, in the national interest.

Meanwhile, the third resolution urged that Sarawak be granted full autonomy over its education system.

He said today’s gathering was to reaffirm and focus on the first resolution, which he described as central to Sarawak’s identity, dignity and sovereignty.

“TSI, together with many members from Civil Society of Sarawak representing our diverse and vibrant communities, stands here in solidarity — united in one voice and with one message: clear, firm, and unambiguous — that the natural resources, including oil and gas found within the territory of Sarawak, rightfully belong to the peoples of Sarawak,” he said.

“These resources are not mere commodities to be traded away. They are the lifeblood of our economy, the foundation of our autonomy, and the inheritance of our children,” he added.

John emphasised that the resolutions represented a collective effort to safeguard Sarawak’s long-term interests.

“When it comes to defending Sarawak’s rights, we must never be afraid to stand firm. We must never let go without putting up a good and principled fight.

“We fight not with anger, but with conviction from our united hearts — and that unity is our greatest strength,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the 33 civil society organisations represented under the Participating Civil Society of Sarawak, which gathered in solidarity at the event.

“The long list of names you see on the screen represents the unwavering spirit of Sarawakians who have stepped forward in unity. Your names will be remembered in history as the heroes of Sarawak — citizens who stood tall when it mattered most,” he said.

John concluded his address by reaffirming Sarawak’s stance on ownership of its natural wealth.

“Let it be known, and let it be remembered: Sarawak’s resources belong to Sarawak. And as long as we stand together — united in purpose and conviction — no force can take that away from us,” he said. -The Borneo Post
