The Sarawak Initiatives held its first Annual General Meeting via Zoom platform on 10 July
2021 and was well attended by Committee Members as well as the Ordinary Members. The
AGM discussed the activities in the last one year and plans for the next year.
Over the last one year despite the Covid 19 Pandemic, TSI has been able to carry out a few
activities including a collaboration with the Lions Club Kuching North in adopting three
secondary students and providing them with financial bursaries. TSI also collaborated with
Kharma Kagyu Dharma Society and the Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) in providing
towels and blankets to residents affected by the Kuching flood at Kampung Kudei, Kampung
Sungai Apong, Poh Kwong Park and Song Kheng Hai areas.
TSI was requested to help to engage a licensed surveyor to carry out pegs verification survey
along the perimeter of a cemetery land occupied by squatters. TSI highlighted the living
condition of the squatters living at the cemetery at the Chawan Road and hopefully their
plights will be resolved by the relevant authorities.
On Education, TSI led by its Chairman Datuk John Tenewi, a former Ambassador of Malaysia
made a visit to YB Datuk Amar Michael Manyin anak Jawong , the Sarawak Minister of
Education, Science and Technological Research to understand the Sarawak Government’s
Education policy. TSI fully supports the Sarawak Government’s effort to build 5 international
schools using the Cambridge syllabus and English as the medium of instruction. TSI views
this as a major step forward in our Education policy.
TSI is currently organising a Leadership Programme and 36 prominent lecturers will be
delivering lectures on current affairs on topics covering Education, Economics, Integrity,
Principles of Government, Gender Equality, A Sarawak Identity and more. Nearly 200
aspiring leaders have registered for the Leadership Programme as of now.
TSI hopes that when the Covid Pandemic is contained, it will be possible to organise
international conference on Human Rights and Education and hold extensive discussion and
forums and seminars on Sarawak diverse cultural identities that may be rediscovered
through research and participation from Artists, Musicians, Choreographers, Designers,
folklorists, mythologists and many other cultural experts. This will be a small investment
that could eventually turn into big returns for Sarawak in term of national unity and as TSI
tries to develop A Sarawak Cultural Identity that could transform into our Sarawak tourism
products.
